Atlantic Seaboard Wine Association has new officers and name, but retains its goals

East Coast Vinifera Wine
Leesburg, Va. -- Thirty-five years ago, in 1973, Robert de Treville Lawrence, Sr., started an organization called the Vinifera Wine Growers Association, to promote the planting of vinifera grapevines and the production of quality vinifera wines in the eastern United States. On Sunday, Aug. 24, the association's current president, Gordon W. Murchie, announced that the Vinifera Wine Growers Association (VWGA) will become the Atlantic Seaboard Wine Association (ASWA) on Sept. 2, 2008.

Emerging tool reduces berry size, moderates sugar accumulation

Syrah Canes

Peter Fraser introduced a sacrificial caning technique at Barham Vineyard in Santa Barbara County, Calif., in hopes of producing smaller berries that have more concentrated flavors.

Put 10 winemakers in a room, and you'll hear 100 conflicting opinions on everything from trellising techniques to the best meat pies. As a group we have strong, shifting opinions, and we're not afraid to unload them on the nearest ear. Winemakers' Views On Why Wines Age

What makes wine age

Although winemaker Peter McCrea of Stony Hill claims not to know what makes certain wines age well, the winery's Napa Valley Chardonnay is known to be drinkable for up to 30 to 40 years.

As every enology graduate knows, there's science, and then there's winemaking.

Finger Lakes Makes Match With Riesling

Finger Lakes Wine

Dr. Konstantin Frank, an immigrant from Ukraine, is credited with bringing Riesling to the Finger Lakes region of New York in the 1950s. Convinced the cold-resistant vinifera would thrive when grafted to native rootstock, he planted Riesling in his vineyard (above) in Hammondsport, N.Y.

Stags Leap Cabernet. Oregon Pinot Noir. New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Will Finger Lakes Riesling be the next wine marketed as a geo-grape?

The Irony of a Corked Bottle

It was another party marred by another bottle of corked wine. But it wasn't just any party. It was a reception for the 2008 Merit Award winner of the American Society for Enology and Viticulture. A couple of dozen ASEV members, friends and family members gathered in a hotel suite in Portland, Ore., to celebrate Bob Steinhauer's acceptance of the award, and his memorable address at the ASEV annual meeting(see "Robert Steinhauer Reflects").

Borrowing a Cellar To Make Your Wine

Custom Crush Winery

Expense leads many winemakers to use the machinery and expertise offered by custom crush facilities such as Yokayo Wine Co. (left) and Napa Wine Co. (right). Being honest about what you are looking for, and getting appropriate insurance coverage, can help mitigate any problems down the road.

In Northern California, the number of wine labels in circulation today dwarfs the actual number of winery buildings. Obviously, a whole lot of us are making wine in someone else's cellar, and the person who came up with the name "custom crush" is a marketing genius. The phrase implies that the recipient of this "custom crush" automatically receives some kind of very special attention. Sometimes this is the case, but often it's not.
