Napa, Calif. -- American Winesecrets of Napa acquired the reverse osmosis-based technologies and alcohol-adjustment services of Sebastapol, Calif-based Vinovation Inc.

Growers Transition to Organic

The ins and outs of registration, certification and building your soil

Organic winegrowing

The use of cover crops, animals and compost are hallmarks of organic growing at Jim Fetzer's Ceàgo Vinegarden (above). "In the 1980s... chef John Ash used to make outstanding meals for our guests. We thought, 'If organic vegetables taste so good, how would organic winegrapes taste?'" Fetzer said.

In California, more than 9,000 acres of vineyards have been certified as organically farmed. During the past 20 years, practical grower knowledge backed by university research has helped to create organic farming practices that allow the production of high-quality fruit at yields comparable to vineyards farmed with conventional farming practices. Since 2006, when the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) adopted regulations limiting to 3 ounces the amount of liquids passengers could carry onto a plane, vacationers visiting tasting rooms--and the wineries that want their business--have been forced to get creative.

One Rationale for Going Organic

Those of us old enough to remember the first time organic wines came around need to get over ourselves. Twenty-five years ago the wines were mostly terrible; the vineyards were largely amateur-hour productions, and the public quickly turned away.

Green Wine Without Greenwashing?

Until now, the sustainable winegrowing programs of which I am aware have been dedicated to education and self improvement, with regions and states coming together to develop programs to help themselves move along the sustainable farming continuum. One aspect of sustainable winegrowing is only now beginning to emerge, and that is marketing winegrapes and wines produced using sustainable practices. It is an essential aspect of sustainable winegrowing for the simple reason that if one cannot sell his wines in sufficient amounts, the vineyard and winery will go out of business--in other words, they will not be sustainable.
