Napa, Calif. -- Napa winegrowers, ranchers and winery owners are taking a minimalist approach to preserving the county's agricultural land--at least in terms of their attire. Thirteen members of the Napa County Farm Bureau (NCFB) posed for "Napa Uncovered," a cheeky 2008 wall calendar that features photos of the men in various states of undress. Proceeds from sales of the $18 calendars will help support NCFB's efforts to preserve and protect Napa Valley's agricultural resources.
Al Wagner, vineyard manager for Napa's Clos Du Val winery, conceived the idea for "Napa Uncovered," and recruited others to join him as models. Wagner is featured in the calendar as "Mr. July," wearing only a cowboy hat, an apron and cowboy boots. None of the participants went "the full Monty," Wagner confirmed.
Convincing fellow growers and vintners to participate in the project wasn't especially difficult, Wagner said. "Everyone laughed at first, but then as we started talking about it they said, 'You know what? I'll do that.'" Wagner told
Wines & Vines, "I think we have people lined up for next year already."
Wagner is joined by Jon-Mark Chappellet, Chappellet Winery; Eric Pooler, Hall Winery; Albert Rios, Rios Farming Co.; Michael Hanna, Hanna Winery; vineyard owner Bob Barbarick; Tom Carpenter, Grgich Hills; Michael Honig, Honig Winery; Cio Perez, NCFB district director; Kirk Grace, whose family owns Grace Family Vineyards; cattle rancher Dan McQueeney; Jason Lauritsen, Regusci Vineyard Management; and RJ Lauritsen, Clos du Val. Russ Munn, photojournalist and agribusiness photographer, shot the photos.
In addition to raising money for agricultural preservation, Wagner said he hopes the calendar will help to loosen Napa's buttoned-up image. "Everyone felt that Napa has been way too stuffy in the past, and so we thought we'd do something that's a little out of the ordinary," he said. "It was all in fun."
NCFB set a goal of selling 2,000 calendars, but, Wagner said, "The way it's being received so far, we may exceed that."
Calendars may be preordered now at napafarmbureau.org, and will be available for general purchase in October--both online and at participating wineries. A limited number of autographed calendars will be available on Oct. 16 for $36 at
